Palau – Stunning Natural Wonders Under The Sea, on Land & in The Air

“I want to come back, and I’ve only just arrived!” I declared, on viewing the lush, picturesque views of Palau from my balcony.

After getting off the plane from Australia, we’d headed straight to Airai Water Paradise Hotel & Spa where, greeting us, were friendly staff as well as authentic local décor – in the form of large Palauan storyboards featured in the lobby. Large also described our rooms which had two double beds, as well as the generous breakfasts in the AWP restaurant, which further showcased the scenic panorama through French windows.

Exploring this panorama was next. Firstly, under the sea – embarking on a Fish ’N Fins boat tour, we saw the amazing Rock Islands close-up. Covered in jade-green vegetation, over 450 of small uninhabited islands create the distinctive jewel-like landscape off Palau’s southern lagoon. The crew skilfully navigated us around then we enjoyed a swim in the warm aqua waters of the Milky Way – where limestone mud at the lagoon bottom can be used as a natural beauty mask.

The next Fish ’N Fins adventure exploring Palauan waters involved diving and snorkelling. Schools of spectacular fish flittered around us like neon confetti. Reef sharks, large blue starfish and coral gardens populated the isolated islets among the rock islands – truly a paradise.

The next day, a Fish ’N Fins personalised land tour tuned out to be a perfect combination of culture and relaxation.  Comfortable minibuses had professional drivers accompanied by expert guides – special mention to Darcy who was a font of knowledge.

Visiting WWII tanks and monuments, we learned about the role Palau played in the war. And charming souvenirs were found when visiting Palauan art and handicraft stores. All the included lunches were delicious – usually a Japanese bento, one of my favourite meal options with good vegetarian and vegan options.

Speaking of which, Surangel’s Supercenter – which offers travellers as well as locals everything one could need – had a great little ramen eatery as well as a delicious artisanal gelato bar featuring local ingredients. Continuing the food theme, delectable lobster and authentic Indian cuisine featured at The Taj restaurant while we enjoyed fresh crab from local farmers at Driftwood Café Bar & Grill along with stunning ocean views. Also at the water’s edge, Elilai Seafood Dining offered sunset views of the Rock Islands accompanying local catch and delectable international as well as Palauan fare.

Learning about Palau – its ways and culture was fascinating – and back to the land tour, the ‘Bai’, a traditional meeting house, was impressive as were the fascinating ancient stone monoliths which, according to Palauan belief, were revered as sacred prayer grounds, a place where earth met the divine.

On the heavens theme, and to put a smile on your dial is, appropriately, Smile Air.  Their aerial tours offer spectacular birds-eye views over the island. Breathtaking vistas of Palau were revealed and our fabulous pilot-guide pointed out a kangaroo-shaped island for us Aussies! Laid out before you in all its regal wonder – the jewellery of Palau’s Rock Islands literally renders passengers speechless. These incredible scenic flights are a must-do, so be sure to put one on your bucket list!

And to wind down, do make sure you have a relaxing massage or treatment at Barberia and Beauty Salon so you’ll be rejuvenated for another day of Palauan adventures.
